THE UPTOWN THAT WAS looks back at the history of one of New Orleans’ most colorful neighborhoods over the last 75 years, including Tulane Stadium, the Lee Circle main branch of the New Orleans Public Library, and neighborhood movie theaters, such as the Prytania and the Napoleon.
Also remembered will be Audubon Park, where visitors enjoyed riding on the Swanboat and the “flying horses,” an elaborately carved carousel. The documentary looks back at the heyday of the Dryades Street shopping area, and Valencia, a popular recreation center for some Uptown teenagers.
More than sixteen New Orleans notables share their Uptown memories. They include: author Anne Rice, New Orleans music legends Irma Thomas and “Deacon John” Moore, Audubon Institute Executive Director Ron Forman, Louisiana State Senator John Hainkel, New Orleans City Councilman Oliver Thomas and artist/musician George Schmidt.
