RESHAPING NEW ORLEANS: OUR NEIGHBORHOODS NOW

With the third anniversary of Katrina approaching, WYES measures the progress of city plans to rebuild a stronger, safer, smarter New Orleans.

Asking the hard-hitting questions are panelists: urban planner Steven Villavaso, University of New Orleans Department of Planning and Urban Studies Professor Dr. John Renne and Broadmoor Improvement Association President LaToya Cantrell.

Answering our panels questions about reviving our community from ruin and eliminating blight are: The Executive Director of Recovery Management for the City of New Orleans Dr. Edward Blakely, Louisiana Recovery Authority Executive Director Paul Rainwater, FEMA Transitional Recovery Director Jim Stark and the Army Corps of Engineers Colonel Jeff Bedey of the New Orleans Hurricane Protection Office.

WVUE Fox 8 anchor John Snell moderates.

This special program is a followup to RESHAPING NEW ORLEANS: THE SHAPE WE'RE IN, THE SHAPE WE'LL TAKE, which first aired in September 2007 as part of the WYES commitment to in depth coverage of New Orleans post-Katrina renewal.

Viewers are invited to suggest topics and questions about the shape of New Orleans neighborhoods. E-mail us at: reshapingneworleans@wyes.org . ___________________________________

________________________________

David Voelker, Dr. Edward Blakely and Donald E. Powell will field questions from professional and citizen planners who helped craft the city's recovery blueprint.

Dr. Blakely says that the “…Citywide Strategic Recovery and Redevelopment Plan has to match our intentions.” ( The Times-Picayune, July, 26, 2007) What are those intentions? What form will they take as the ReSHAPING OF NEW ORLEANS begins?

- Is the Citywide Strategic Recovery and Redevelopment Plan more than just thoughts and words on paper?

- Can it really serve as a practical, workable blueprint to rebuild the city into the community that all residents and neighborhoods want?
